Poland: Modern crossing-keeper support system

10 May

As a component of its drive to improve safety, PKP Polish Railway Lines is set to roll-out a modern support system for nearly 400 level crossings supervised by crossing keepers. The new system provides crossing keepers with comprehensive information in respect of trains approaching each level crossings and with this greater insight plan when the crossing needs to be closed to road traffic

The Crossing Keeper Support System (SWDP) provides this information over the GSM network, eliminating the need for cabled connections and thus a substantial cost saving alongside an expected improvement of safety at level crossings

In 2014 a pilot project saw the functionality of the system tested at 23 sites generating improvements in the version available for national deployment for which funding has been sought.
