Iron County, MO: Sheriff shoots for crossing upgrades

The December 28th, 2015 death of a man when his light truck was hit by a train on a passive level crossing of the Union Pacific Railroad’s (UP) right-of-way. The crossing on County Road 32 near Pilot Knob has prompted the Iron County Sheriff to call for improvements at this and another on highway K with steep approaches and a risk of grounding long vehicles. Improvements sought are the installation of lights and barriers along with changing the profile of the roads to eliminate the risk of a vehicle grounding as it crosses the railway.

Following a meeting with UP and state officials, at which six Iron County level crossings were identified as dangerous, the next step is to engage with the state legislature to garner support for funding improvements at two extremely dangerous as a matter of urgency
