Poole, UK: Network Rail affirms intent to eliminate problem crossing

11 Dec

Network Rail has affirmed its intent to seek closure of the level crossing in Poole town centre at a future date. This is because of the risks posed by deliberate and accidental misuse of the level crossing by pedestrians.

Remote control via CCTV has become difficult with the endemic misuse which can lead to people being trapped on the crossing because of a failure to stop as required when the stop lights are showing a red aspect and the audible alarm is operating. This is additional to horse play with school age children swinging on the lowered barriers.

Now, the local authority – Poole Borough Council – is under notice that a grade separated solution is needed. Logically this should be constructed as a component of a wider town centre strategy as any development would, in all probability, increase the risk of an accident.
