Thatcham, UK: Fantasyland proposal to solve crossing problems

13 Oct

Reality in local politics is a luxury that fringe parties can forget when it comes to spending money to solve a level crossing problem. This is the case in Thatcham where Network Rail and West Berkshire District Council have ruled out a bridged solution to eliminate a level crossing. Now UKIP has weighed-in with a crudely drawn plan involving three bridges over the railway, Kennet & Avon Canal and the River Kennett with UKIP members with engineering experience saying that their solution would cost between GBP20-30 million.

How is this to be funded? UKIP suggest by scrapping new high-speed rail projects allowing central government, Network Rail – itself a public body and West Berkshire District Council to foot the bill. there are far better uses to which the envisaged spend should be committed.
