Spalding, UK: Axle-counter failures continuing, motorists frustrated

The project to upgrade the GN & GE joint line between Peterborugh and Doncaster via Lincoln has introduced axle-counter technology, the repeated failure of which is keeping level crossings closed to road users for extended periods as a fail-safe precaution. The resultant frustration of motorists and pedestrians is exacerbated by the time it takes for Network Rail to respond to these failures. A recent example of the failure of axle counters was the near 90 minute closure to road users of Spalding’s Winsover Road level crossing from about 15.00 on September 19th, 2015.

It has been reported that local councillors are upset that a requested meeting with Network Rail has still to be agreed, meanwhile Network Rail apologies do nothing to satisfy both local politicians and affected road users. However, Network Rail has said that faulty equipment is being replaced
