Purgstall an der Erlauf, Austria: Five killed in passive crossing collision

Five family members were killed and a further three injured when the people carrier in which they were travelling was struck by a passenger train on the Gaisbergweg passive level crossing in Purgstall an der Erlauf, Bezirk Scheibbs. One of the survivors remains critically ill and both others are seriously ill but stable following the accident at about 1848 on May 22nd, 2015.

An eyewitness is reported as having said they the vehicle was driven onto the level crossing without stopping as required by posted signs.

This is the third fatal level crossing accident in the Erlauf valley in two months. On March 18th, two elderly females were killed when their car was hit by a train in Scheibbs. Then on May 2nd a woman died of the injuries she sustained when the car in which she was a passenger was struck by a train on April 17th.
