Amite, LA: Truck driver killed in passenger train collision

12 May

LXinfoAn Amtrak passenger train collided with a large flatbed truck on a level crossing in Amite, Mississippi on May 10th, 2015. The collision occurred at about 2.00 pm on the passive level crossing linking Pope Lane with the US51 highway. The truck driver was killed and two passengers travelling on the train were slightly injured. Material damage to the locomotive was significant.

The truck driver is understood to have been familiar with the level crossing at which the accident occurred. Residents living on Pope Lane have reiterated their concerns and demands that the level crossing is upgraded to active protection.

However, it is of note that the level crossing was slated for closure in 2004 and was retained at the request of the municipality, pending construction of a link road that would link Pope Lane to an alternative, safer, route across the railway. Residents have said that in the past 20 years there have been a number of accidents at this level crossing. It has also been identified that some users of the level crossing protected by stop signs, ignore this requirement and drive straight across. With the railway running at right angles to the road, there is a need to stop when the drivers’ cab / front windows of a car are at right angles to the railway, creating an optimal view along the railway in both directions.
