Melbourne, VIC: Divert federal funds to level crossing removal

8 Apr

Federal funds would, if the Victoria state administration has its way will be diverted to level crossing removal rather than the East-West Link project. However, the federal position remains that it has agreed to provide AUD3.0 billion for the East-West Link and nothing else.

This standoff comes at a time when the Labor administration in Melbourne is preparing its first state budget with a gap as to how the commitment to eliminate 50 level crossings in GreaterĀ Melbourne. The Labor pre-election position was that the level crossing removal funding would come from the sale of the Port of Melbourne.

The State stance is based on their opposition to the East West Link highway project and therefore a view that the funding already provided for and pledged to the East Wast Link can legitimately be diverted and that the AUD1.5 billion already handed over need not revert to the federal government.
