Elmwood Park, NJ: Upgrading a dangerous level crossing to begin

23 Mar

Work to upgrade the notorious Midland Avenue level crossing in Elmwood Park will start by the end of March 2015 according to the state’s Department of Transportation. This crossing has been implicated in many accidents in recent years.

The problem crossing sits on top of rising ground meaning, that in some circumstances, motorists cannot see if their exit from the level crossing is obstructed or not. This results in vehicles being driven onto the crossing when blocking-back occurs.

The USD0.8 million project will deliver new traffic control signals, upgraded roadway and new pavement markings by the time that the project is complete in the summer. USD0.3 million is coming from federal funds and the balance from state coffers.
