Badaun, India: Crossing closure generates protester blockade

12 Mar

Senior railway officials onboard a special train to inspect newly laid tracks on the Bareily-Kasgunj route were ‘held hostage’ by angry residents of Mohammadpur Bihar village in Badaun for over two hours on March 9th, 2015 over closure of an unmanned level crossing connecting their village to the city.

This incident is the latest of many demonstrations when the pressure to close level crossings is pushed through without the support of the local community. Residents blocked the railway and refused to allow the special train, on-board which senior officials of the North-East Zonal Railway, to move. Intervention of local police and Railway Preotection Force officers was needed to end the protest.
