Goshen, IN: Citations for crossing blockages reducing

23 Jan

The crackdown on trains blocking level crossings in Elkhart County appears to be facilitating a solution to the problem, In October 2014 police issued 117 citations to Norfolk Southern Railway Co (NS) with the ticket count falling to 44 in November and just two in December 2014. However, a number of the citations were cancelled as they had not been issues in accordance with state law. When a ticket stands, the fine is USD 500 plus court costs per offence.

State law is that it is unlawful for a railway company to allow any train (including  a light locomotive) to obstruct a level crossing for a period of more than 10 minutes, except where the train cannot clear the crossing for reasons over which the railway has no control.
