Melbourne, VIC: Truck driver jailed for five years following fatal crossing collision

An elderly truck driver was, in December 2014, jailed for five years following guilty pleas to offences arising from a collision on November 3rd, 2012 that killed a passenger and injured others travelling on the train. The 71-year-old admitted a charge of culpable driving causing death and four charges of negligently causing serious injury,

The barriers were down and red lights flashing when Bollen drove through onto the Dandenong South level crossing at about 11.40, nine hours after her had started work. The truck driver denied falling asleep and that he was fatigued. He also denied using his mobile ‘phone. Rather, he blamed the fatal accident as being attributed to 19 seconds of inattention.

Civil action arising from railway costs incurred as a result of the collision is ongoing.
