Melbourne, VIC: Council pushes for crossing fix in Labor’s first term

8 Jan

Moonee Valley Council is mobilising to push the recently elected Labor administration to confirm that the Buckley Street level crossing in Essendon will be one of the 20 level crossings in the Greater Melbourne area to be grade-separated during its first four-year term of office. By pushing for a first term solution, the Council doesn’t want to rely on Labor being reelected for a second term within which it has pledged to eliminate a further 30 level crossings. The Labor administration has not said when it will publish the prioritised list of crossings to be eliminated, mostly by way of grade-separation,

The Council is also stressing that it wants to see the railway lowered to pass under the street. This option is the preferred solution from the feasibility study, albeit with an AUD186 million price tag.
