6 Jan

for some years the Norfolk Southern Railroad (NS) has been working towards an agreement with the City of Goshen to realign the curve giving access to the Marion branch in order that train speed might be improved to 20mph and delays to road users reduced. Now, following approval of an agreement with the City, NS has until September 30th, 2015 to complete the works that will also include elimination of one level crossing completely and a second to vehicular traffic.

The agreement provides for:

  • The city having agreed to close the Ninth Street level crossing of the NS main Chicago corridor and the company’s Marion branch line to all traffic.
  • The city having agreed to  close the Washington Street level crossing of the Marion branch to all vehicular traffic.
  • NS having agreed to provide a pedestrian crossing of the Marion branch line on Washington Street.
  • The city and Indiana’s Department of Transportation having agreed to purchase and demolish three properties on Ninth Street.
  • NS having agrees to pay the city no more than USD60,000 to close the Ninth and partially close the Washington street level crossings.
  • NS having agreed to fund and deliver realignment of the curve onto the Marion branch to increase train speeds to 20mph by September 30thG, 2015.
