Mumbai, India: Ministerial announces committee to oversee crossing closures

15 Dec

East-west roads in Mumbai have long been blighted by level crossings on both India’s Central and Western zonal railways (WR / CR). On December 13th, 2014 there was an announcement by Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu who said that level crossings will be shut to reduce delays to both trains and road users.

The Minister said that in November 2014 a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with the Ministry of Road Transport earlier this November addressing the construction of grade separated routes across the railway within Greater Mumbai. locations identified are in Bandra, Jogeshwari, Goregaon on the WR. On the CR five level crossings on the Main Line at Kurla, Diva, Thakurli, Kalwa and Ambivli on the Main line and one at Chunabhatti on the Harbour line.

Already the only way in which the level crossings of the WR can function at peak times is for them to remain closed to road traffic for the duration. However, on the CR this approach has not been adopted with delays and cancellation of, on average 75, rail services the norm

Mr Prabhu has also said that a new coordination committee comprising representatives of all relevant government agencies will be formed and monitored quarterly by Maharashtra’s Chief Minister.
