The village of Ashford Bowdler, near Ludlow, is united in opposition to the division of the village that will result if the automatic half-barrier level crossing in the village is eliminated as planned.

As a component of the wider upgrade of the Shrewsbury to Newport railway on which increased rail traffic is forecast, Network Rail proposes eliminating the level crossing and constructing a new link to provide access to the dwellings located east of the railway to which the level crossing is presently the only access. If the level crossing is eliminated, the detour to the other half of the village is 1.5 miles, including a stretch on the busy A49 trunk road. A sub-option is to retain a pedestrian level crossing and divert all vehicular traffic over the new link to the wider highway system.
