Horses roaming near a railway crossing in Milton in September 2014Twelve horses were killed when they were hit by trains on the Milton Fen automatic half-barrier level crossing near Cambridge shortly before 17.15 on November 19th, 2014. The horses were hit by two trains, one travelling in each direction. A passenger travelling on one of the trains sustained minor injuries and was treated ayr hospital and discharged.

British Transport Police issued an appeal for information from both witnesses to the incident and those knowing how the stray horses came to be on the railway.

The Cambridge News published a picture of horses that strayed near the same level crossing on September 14th, 2014 which they say should have acted as a warning. However, it is not known whether this earlier incident was drawn to the attention of Network Rail or British Transport Police.
