Chennai, India: Anger builds at delay in replacing crossing with a bridge

13 Oct

With the level crossing adjacent to Korattur railway station in the Chennai metropolitan region, having been closed for more than a year, frustration is moving towards anger as the replacement rail over road bridge remains no more than a hole in the ground. The level crossing had provided motorists with direct access to the Anna Nagar area of the city who now face a 5km detour to cross the railway. Local people are clearly angry that they too cannot cross the railway safely.

While the Southern zonal railway is responsible for the construction of the rail-over-road bridge itself, the Tamil Nadu State Highways  Department is responsible for the approaches and highway works on either side of the bridge. The State Highways Department explains the delay as being caused  by problems in acquiring the land necessary for the works for which they are responsible.
