Victoria: Only Labor can eliminate level crossings fast enough

6 Oct

Level crossings are certainly a central policy issue for Labor ahead of November’s state elections. Almost daily thee are news stories that Labor will target that crossing, and that one and that one. In total Labor’s pledge is that they will target the worst 50 of Melbourne’s level crossings; way ahead of the incumbent State Government’s position.

Clearly, funding remains a real challenge with talk of spending between AUD5-6 billion to achieve its goal of 50 fewer level crossings. Is selling the Port of Melbourne going to kick start this programme or is other funding tied to economic development going to fund infrastructure projects. This is just one issue among many that will determine the appeal of returning Labor as the next State Government.

There’s still time for plenty more photo-opportunities right up until polling day as it is clear that the electorate is keen to see traffic flowing quicker than an ever-busier rail network leads to longer and more frequent waits at level crossings across the Greater Melbourne conurbation.
