Gippsland, VIC: 32 crossing axle-counter safety upgrade underway

The successful trial of axle-counters technology on the Gippsland Line, a route plagued with railhead corrosion affecting the detection of trains and thus compromising the safe operation of level crossings. Indeed, the failure to detect the presence of a train led to the line being closed for an extended period. Now, the technology is being installed at 32 active level crossings between Taralgon, where the trial took place and Bairnsdale. The cost of these works has been estimated to be AUD8.3 million.
