Thiruvavavthapuram, India: Government to fund level crossing if railway agrees

23 Jun

Kerala’s Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, has said that the state government would bear the cost of building a new level crossing in Palakkad if the Railway Board will permit this.

The Chief Minister announced the decision following a meeting with district officials and a representative of the railway. This meeting was held in light of the disruption to local life that would arise if the overbridge planned by the railway is built. Activists see the bridge as destroying the cohesion of Palakkad as it forms a barrier and does not facilitate interaction between those on each side of the railway.

Given India’s commitment to reducing risk arising at level crossings, it is unlikely that the Kerala Chief Minister will have to find money for an upgraded level crossing.
