Pune: Rural collision leaves three dead and 11 injured

6 May

Three sugarcane harvesters were killed and 11 injured when the tractor and trailer on which they were travelling was hit by a train. The accident happened on a manned level crossing between Uruli Kanchan and Yevat railway stations, around 45 km from Pune, at about 07.00 on May 3rd, 2014.

The deaths occurred at a time when the signals had been cleared for the approaching train while the barriers were in the raised position for the passage of road traffic. Accordingly, one strand of the investigations launched by the Central Railway and Police is the extent to which the crossing keeper operated the crossing in accordance with established procedures and where this was not the case, the culpability of the crossing keeper.
