Rochdale, UK: MP brokers meeting with Network Rail

9 Apr

Member of Parliament, Simon Danczuk, brokered a meeting between those concerned about the safety impact of controlling the Smithy Bridge level crossing in Rochdale remotely as has been the case since January 2014.

Those attending the meeting explained that their concerns related to the quad-barriers that close the road having remained open when trains have passed over the level crossing and other issues related to the operation of the barriers. Network Rail admitted that there had been teething problems with the reconfigured crossing and that they are committed to addressing concerns.

Hopefully, Network Rail will continue to engage with the community to allay their fears and demonstrate that the level crossing system is of high-integrity with risk reduced so far as is reasonably practicable.

The scale of concern is significant as prior to the meeting on April 4th, 2014 a petition relating to the Smithy Bridge level crossing was signed by more than 1,000 people within the local community.
