Dhenkanal, India: One killed, seven injured in crossing collision, riot ensues

One person was killed and seven seriously injured when a train collided with a motorcycle and an auto-rickshaw on the Simli manned level crossing in Dhenkanal District, Odisha. The accident which occurred on April 2nd, 2014, led to civil unrest after it became clear that the crossing keeper had, in error, left the barrier in the raised position when it should have been lowered to prevent vehicular use of the level crossing. Reports indicate that the locomotive of the train involved was set on fire and that a railway policeman and the train driver were injured. India’s East Coast Railway has launched a high-level inquiry.
