Rangiriri, New Zealand: Fatal collision with a truck on passive crossing

27 Feb

A truck driver has died as a result of a collision with a passenger train on a lightly used passive level crossing in Rangiriri, Waikato, at about 09.45 on February 27th, 2014. Initial reports say that none of these travelling on the train were injured. The collision which was at the level crossing on Te Onetea Road involved a low-loader which was carrying heavy equipment. The risk of injury to those travelling on the train would have been higher had the train struck the loaded low-loader rather than the tractor unit. A KiwiRail spokesperson has said that the level crossing doesn’t have an accident history.
