Enfield, UK: Footbridge or crossing upgrade on the cards

27 Feb

More than a year ago the Lincoln Road level crossing near Enfield Town railway station which is equipped with manually controlled gates was closed to vehicular traffic because of safety concerns. Now, Network Rail has indicated that it is looking at how the route across the railway can be made safer for pedestrians. The option of providing a footbridge with step-free access may be ruled out because of the built environment within which the level crossing is situated. The alternative is to provide red-green warning lights to address the risk level associated with continued use of the level crossing by other than vehicular traffic. Any work will to improve the situation will be funded from the money set aside for level crossing safety improvement in the agreed funding of Network Rail that kicks-in in April 2014.
