Chennai, India: Six-lane highway to replace congested level crossing

6 Feb

A six-lane road-over-rail bridge is to be built as a replacement for the heavily congested and road traffic pinch-point that is the Pattabiram No 2 level crossing on the Chennai-Tiruvallur road. The project is a joint initiative of the state highways authority and the Southern Railway for which a budget of INR 300 million was allocated by the state government in 2011. However, when this project will actually deliver is still not clear as there are land plan and acquisition issues to resolve before construction can start. Meanwhile the road traffic is backed-up for hours on end as the level crossing is closed to road traffic for more than half of the time.
