Chichester, UK: Notorious level crossing eliminated

27 Jan

Network Rail has eliminated a level crossing in Fishbourne, near Chichester, Sussex; which in recent has seen three fatalities, 22 near misses with trains, nine reports of misuse and 18 acts of vandalism.

The footbridge that has replaced the pedestrian level crossing has long been sought by residents and they see the project delivering a step-free bridge that is suitable for the mobility impaired as a victory. Indeed, they have claimed a victory for their campaign for a grade separated route that links Fishbourne Road East and Westgate.

The bridge was completed in August 2013 with the crossing closure on safety grounds only taking effect on January 13th, 2014. Now, an application for permanent closure is being made.
