Europe: UIC reports year-on-year increase in fatalities at level crossings

The International Union of Railways (UIC) has issued a report updating safety performance statistics to include 2012. In so far as level crossings are concerned, the UIC Safety Database shows there to have been 326 fatalities in 2012 which is the highest number since 2009 and a 15% increase on 2011 when there were 284 fatalities. However, the number killed on level crossings in 2012 was 8% better than 2006 when there were 353 fatalities. The safety database includes data for 20 UIC members in Europe.
