Newcastle, New South Wales: New coal mine will increase road traffic delay

3 Jan

The controversial proposal to develop a new underground coal mine, known as Wallarah 2, on the Central Coast will generate more trains and impact on Newcastle level crossing closure times. unless mitigation is funded the impact is an increase of almost one-hour daily in the time that level crossings are closed to road traffic. Particular concerns have been raised in respect of the already congested St James Road, Adamstown and Clyde Street, Islington level crossings.

At present there is little or no political will to address the root cause of the increasing levels of freight traffic passing to and through Newcastle despite a well-reasoned case that a freight rail bypass is constructed or, failing this, that grade-separation is pursued. Clearly in terms of the impact on the community, the freight bypass is the preferred long-term solution.
