Nairobi, Kenya: 12 dead in level crossing collision

9 Dec

Twelve people died when the bus on which they were travelling was hit by a train on an unmanned level crossing in the Umoja district of Niarobi. In addition 21 people were taken to hospital with injuries of varying severity as a result of the collision which occurred at about 07.00 on October 30th, 2013. Witnesses have said that the bus appeared to stall as it was crossing the level crossing seconds before the train collided with it. The driver who jumped clear of the bus before the collision fled the scene of the accident but was subsequently arrested.

Sightlines at the level crossing at which the accident occurred are compromised by the presence of market stalls along the railway. Post accident, It has been announced that the stalls are to be removed.

This accident has raised wider concerns regarding passive level crossings in populated areas.

This was not posted currently as a result of an error on my part.
