Melbourne, Victoria: Sell the port, close the level crossings

19 Nov

Level crossings were an issue in the last Victoria state elections and look to be staking a claim for further discussion next time around.

In the latest move regarding the level crossings in the greater Melbourne region, the Victoria Labor Party has unveiled a proposal to sell a long-term lease of the Port of Melbourne to raise the funds needed to make rapid progress to end the plague of traffic congestion and harm associated with 50 level crossings in the region. If Labor wins the next state elections it will plan to eliminate the 50 level crossings within eight years.

The political speak and action to deliver the stated goal are two different things. Labor’s vision has merit. However, there is a need to validate that what has been said is capable of delivery with the anticipated value of the Port of Melbourne as collateral.
