Montana & North Dakota: Crossing safety campaign scoops Amtrak award

15 Nov

The latest recipients of the Amtrak Champion Award for non-Amtrak employees has been won by a five-strong group of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (BNSF) and former BNSF employees. The award recognises the work of the group in organising and executing a safety blitz that enhances passenger railway safety in Montana and North Dakota’s Bakken Oil Shale region.

The project undertaken in 2012 had as its objective of raising awareness of the rules for safe use of level crossings in an area where both road and rail traffic has significantly increased as a result of oil-fuelled boom in the Bakken region.

Working in conjunction with the state level Operation Lifesaver teams from North Dakota and Montana, the campaign used multiple channels including public service announcements, billboards, Operation Lifesaver presentations, Officer on the Train events and a crossing safety blitz.
