Cheat Bridge, West Virginia: One killed in collision with tourist train

A truck driver was killed and five rail passengers were critically injured when a truck hit the last two coaches of a tourist train on the US Route 250 level crossing in Cheat Bridge, Pocahontas County. The rear two vehicles of the train were overturned by the force of the impact. The collision occurred at approximately 13.30 on October 11th, 2013.

A preliminary report has said that the active warning devices at the level crossing were functioning correctly at the time of the accident. The preliminary report has also said that there was no evidence of the truck driver braking while it traversed the 980′ distance over which the trucker could see the level; crossing. As a result the truck hit the train at an estimated speed of 60 mph. Some reports state that the truck driver had lost control of his vehicle before he could have seen the level crossing.
