South Milford: Station foot-crossing to be removed on safety grounds

23 Sep

Network Rail is to remove the pedestrian level crossing at South Milford railway station in North Yorkshire on safety grounds. The problem is the significant number of occasions when people cross the railway despite the warning lights have turned to red indicating that it is not safe to cross. Network Rail has said that the crossing will be removed later this month as it is not prepared to wait for an accident before taking action. The problem is mainly related to people who park their car in the station car park and then cross to the platform for Leeds, the principal commuter destination. There is a subway at the station which provides an effective alternative route across the railway, although some consider it a less attractive proposition.
