Penzance, United Kingdom: pressure group opposes crossing elimination

11 Sep

The Friends of Long Rock Mexico Crossing is a group opposed to plans to permanently close a pedestrian level crossing in Long Rock, near Penzance, Cornwall. The plans to permanently close the crossing, which has been temporarily closed since December 2012 following a Coroner’s Inquest into the death of an elderly woman the previous year, is the subject of public consultation which closes on September 13th, 2013.

Since the crossing has been temporarily closed, pedestrians have been expected to use a nearby vehicular level crossing. However, the Friends of Long Rock Mexico Crossing believe that the pedestrian route over the railway via the vehicular crossing is a bigger safety issue than that posed by the erstwhile footpath level crossing.

Once the consultation on the permanent closure proposed by Network Rail is concluded, Cornwall County Council must weigh the evidence of eliminating the risk associated with the pedestrian crossing and that seeking to make the case that there is a greater risk associated with the alternative pedestrian route.
