Mitcham, United Kingdom: Endemic abuse presages safety blitz

10 Sep

With more than 120 cases of pedestrians and motorists running the red lights at the Eastfields Road CCTV equipped level crossing in Mitcham, London, in the last five months a special awareness campaign is to be initiated. The endemic failure to obey the lights has seen 72 pedestrians and 49 motorists risk both their lives and a criminal record since April 2013.

The safety awareness drive will be delivered by a partnership of Network Rail, British Transport Police and the London Fire Brigade. Representatives of these organisations will be speaking to both pedestrians and motorists on September 10th, 2013.

Many pedestrians don’t realise that they face a fine of up to GBP1,000 and a criminal record if they are charged with misusing a level crossing. As for motorists, the full range of motoring offences apply along with those relating to endangering safety on the railway.
