Australia / New Zealand: Rail Safety Week underway

Australasia’s annual bi-national Rail Safety Week kicked-off on August 12th, 2013 with a flurry of media releases and initiatives to raise awareness of the arrangements for the safe use of level crossings and the danger associated with trespass. Illustrating the commitment of the police as partners is an initiative in New South Wales is a blitz that highlights the number of motorists issued with tickets / citations for level crossing offences which, at 306 over the past year, were up 9% on the previous year state-wide.9%

Sanctions for the misuse of level crossings in New South Wales include a fine of AUD 405 and three penalty points for running red lights or entering a level crossing when exit from it is impeded by traffic beyond the crossing.
