Mangalore, India: Fatal crash with minibs on unauthorised level crossing

2 Jul

A woman was killed and five others were injured when a train hit the minibus in which they were travelling on an unauthorised passive level crossing at Kemanjur in Adyar village on the outskirts of Mangalore on June 30th, 2013.

The unauthorised level crossing sits between local authority maintained roads on either side and gives access to in the region of 4,000 residential properties. While it might be an unauthorised crossing, there is evidence that it has been in use for about 40 years. In essence this looks to be a case of the railway treating the crossing as unauthorised even though it knows it is there. The issue behind this is one of finance with the railway expecting the local authority to fund an authorised crossing.
