Chennai, India: Crossing closed two years ago but still no replacement bridge

25 Jun

Work began in April 2010 to construct a road-over-rail bridge to replace the Veppampattu level crossing in Chennai’s western suburbs which has been closed to enable construction to go ahead. The INR295 million project has stalled with the railway having constructed the bridge of the railway and the highways authority one of the approach roads. However, there is no sign that the bridge will be useable any time soon as land purchase issues stand in the way. Even if they were resolved today it is going to take a year for the new road to be complete. Until then, the alternatives remain trespass or a 7km diversion for vehicular traffic.
