Bairnsdale, Victoria: Axle counters are the way ahead

21 Jun

A permanent fix to the train detection problems that have jinxed the Gippsland Line on which the train service was suspended in March 2013 between Traralgon and Bairnsdale is in sight as a decision has been taken by V/Line to install axle counters at all 32 level crossings on the stretch of line that has now been closed for three months. As an interim solution a programme of rail-head grinding is planned for September.

Tenders have been invited for the supply and installation of axle counters with a closing date of July 19th, 2013 with a one-year programme to supply and install anticipated following the expected award of a contract in August 2013.

V/Line has good experience of axle counters detecting trains as they approach level crossings on its Bendigo line.
