An options and design contract for the grade-separation of the Burke Road / Willis Street level crossing in Glen Iris has been let to Hyder Consulting. The unusual dimension is that this is one of four main highway level crossings in Melbourne where tram and railway tracks intersect. This level crossing is used by about 150 trains, 95 trams and 25,700 road vehicles each day. This pattern of operation means that the barriers are closed against trams and road traffic for up to 38 minutes each hour. Also, because of the nature of the intersection, train speeds have been reduced to 15kmh in the immediate vicinity of the level crossing. This is a factor in the length of time the crossing is closed to road traffic.

Options are expected to be available for discussion in about six months
