Carterton, New Zealand: Activist appears to make headway

17 Jun

An activist, who has campaigned for a decade, to secure an upgrade of a passive level crossing at which there have two fatalities does, at long last, appear to be making some headway as a meeting with Carterton Council and KiwiRail has generated a commitment to look at what might be done. This is despite the Wiltons Road level crossing in West Taratahi not satisfying the criteria for an upgrade to an active status. Next step is for Carterton Council to consider how rumble strips or other measures might enhance safety despite the possibility of active controls remaining unfulfilled.

The fatal accidents were in May 2002 when a motorist collided with the side of a train and in February 2013 when a passenger in a road vehicle was killed when it was struck by a train.
