16 May

The death of a 15-year-old on theJohnson’s footpath level crossing footpath level crossing in Bishops Stortford may have been caused in part by distraction a Coroner’s Inquest has heard. Possible sources of fatal distraction are both a mobile teelphone or an iPod and associated earphones as both were found at the scene of the accident that occurred on January 28th, 2012.

The protection associated with Johnson’s footpath level crossing included both lights and an audible warning that provided an indication of when it was safe to cross and when not. These warning devices had been installed after a previous fatality in 2002. Johnson;s footpath crossing was eliminated later in 2012 when it was replaced by a footbridge. Elimination of the level crossing and its replacement by a footbridge was proposed a decade ago; but, this met with objections and was not progressed. Indeed, the eventual closure and provision of a footbridge was only progressed afyer this fatal accident.

A verdict of accidental death has been returned.
