St Albans, Victoria: Campaigners see funding decision as an insult

13 May

The campaign for early resolution of the issues posed by the Main Road level crossing in St Albans claim that the State Government’s decision to only fund AUD 52.3 million pre-construction costs for a grade separated solution in the 2013-2014 State Budget to be an insult. This position is understandable given the many deaths that have occurred on this crossing and the perceived priority given to other “less risky” crossings, including reinstating and upgrading an already mothballed level crossing in Brighton. There appears to be  credibility in the cynical argument that there are few votes for the Liberals in this constituency whereas in Kingston there are; and, it was an election pledge that the already closed crossing would be upgraded and reopened to vehicular traffic.
