Leominster, United Kingdom: Objection to superstore development because of effect on level crossing

13 May

Network Rail, the national rail infrastructure manager has objected to the plans for a new Sainsbury’s superstore because of the impact the stare will have on road traffic over the Mill Street automatic half-barrier level crossing in Leominster. Network Rail’s position is that the crossing should be closed and replaced by a road-over-rail bridge as a condition precedent if the superstore development is to go ahead. Network Rail has cited increased safety risk through crossing misuse as a concern. A particular concern raised by others objecting to the development is the risk of traffic backing-up over the level crossing because of the proximity of a new traffic light controlled junction of the superstore access road and  Mill Street in close proximity to the level crossing.
