Brighton, Victoria: AUD2.4 million on crossing ranked 223rd

9 May

The Victoria 2013-14 State Budget contains AUD2.4 million for work on the mothballed New St level crossing in Brighton which just happens to be in the constituency of the ruling Liberal party’s  deputy leader.

With a previously allocated AUD2.2 million allocated, a total of AUD4.6 million is to be spent on installing barriers and lights at the crossing which ranks 223rd in a prioritised list of crossings across Victoria. What’s more this gated manually controlled Brighton crossing was closed after an accident in 2007.  So why reopen it? To satisfy an election pledge that was illogical as, after all, policy should be to never reopen a closed level crossing.
