Typical of the events associated with the International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) to be held on May 7th, 2013 is the safety week organised by the Rangiya Division of India’s Northeast Frontier Railway.

The week kicked-off on May 1st, 2013 with a “walkathon” from the office of the Divisional Railway Manager in Rangiya. From May 2nd to May 7th, 2013 the following have been arranged:

  • Awareness raising and street-drama at level crossings across the Rangiya Division
  • School and college visits to raise awareness. Branded scholars’ materials will be distributed
  • Launch and SMS mobile ‘phone campaign
  • Distribution of leaflets to build awareness of arrangements for the correct use of level crossings
  • Sports evens and competitions to promote the safe use of level crossings

Indian Railways’ statistics record that 41% of the total number of accidents are at level crossings and that these are responsible for 66% of the deaths and 33% of the injuries. These figures exclude the harm arising at unauthorised level crossings of which there are many even where Indian Railways is aware of the presence of an uauthorised crossing.
