While there was particular emphasis on workplace safety, level crossings were not ignored.

The backdrop to the forum was the  Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)2 statistics that showed that 2012 was the safest year on record, breaking the record set in 2011, with improvements in causality, accident, and level crossing safety. Compared with 2011, the 2012level crossing collision rate

In the level crossing safety field the success of the Kansa City LXInfoImage366-KCSlogo-KCSSouthern Railroad’s (KCS) Operation Lifesaver team was championed as best practice with its commitment and support for Operation Lifesaver at both national and state levels. The commitment carries through increasing level crossing safety awareness; the formation of  more community outreach and law enforcement initiatives;, and delivery of  superior education offerings to support improved level crossing collision rates and trespass prevention.

This year, KCS recognised five of its very best Operation Lifesaver volunteers for their dedication to railway safety and public education. Together, these individuals represent nearly 150 years of railway experience and, in 2012, they alone delivered approaching 25% of KCS’s total of Operation Lifesaver presentations delivered.
