San Diego, California: 115 citations issued in a single day

22 Apr

Police in San Diego has released details of the crossing safety blitz they ran on January 16th, 2013 at two level crossings – on Taylor and Washington streets. The statistics of 115 citations and 55 warnings issued in a single day shows that level crossing misuse is endemic. Enforcement alone will not deliver the required behaviours which need to be inculcated when motorists are learning to drive and before children are allowed, as pedestrians, to walk-out alone. To support the education dimension of Operation Lifesaver, Police Officers handed-out 350 leaflets promoting safe behavior at level crossings.

The railways and transit systems in San Diego have, in the past ten years, seen 65 deaths and 115 injuries. Six of these deaths occurred on the “Old Town” level crossing on Taylor Street.
